The cost of the journey

In 2015, according to Europol, illegal migration directed towards Europe has generated profits estimated between 3 and 6 billion euros. On average, migrants reaching the Schengen area pay 4,500 euros each, all going to criminal organisations of people smugglers and traffickers. A regular and safe journey would cost approximately one seventh of this amount. Just in 2015, 3,763 migrants have died in the sea.
