Poeta, saggista, traduttore, era nato nel 1934 in Canada. È morto il 29 novembre 2014 a New York, negli Stati Uniti. Nel 1999 aveva vinto il premio Pulitzer. Molte sue raccolte sono pubblicate in Italia. Keeping Things Whole è una delle sue poesie più famose.

In a field
I am the absence
of field.
This is
always the case.
Wherever I am
I am what is missing.

When I walk
I part the air
and always
the air moves in
to fill the spaces
where my body’s been.

We all have reasons
for moving.
I move
to keep things whole.
